Comments The Marbled Toadlet was previously assessed by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as Extinct in 1996 (Baillie and Groombridge 1996). It has been reassessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN since 2001 (IUCN 2002), because of continuing uncertainty as to its taxonomic status as well as absence of recent information on its extent of occurrence, status and ecological requirements (Hero et al. 2004). The Extinction Website regard the Marbled Toadlet still as extinct until it has been rediscovered.

Range & Habitat The Marbled Toadlet is known only from the original collection site, south of the mouth of Prince Regent River in the Kimberley zone of Western Australia, Australia. The exact locality is not known, so when its range is mapped a large area is covered, within which the exact locality is assumed to be. This species was found in grasslands and woodlands in areas that flooded. (Hero et al. 2004)

History & Population

The first discovery of the Marbled Toadlet was in Western Australia in 1841. Despite numerous sightings of the species at the time, it has not been recorded since and is known only from the original specimens collected in 1841. (Hero et al. 2004)

Extinction Causes

Threats to this species are unknown (Hero et al. 2004).

Conservation Attempts It is possible that this species can still occur within Prince Regent Nature Reserve (Hero et al. 2004).

Museum Specimens Two specimens of the Marbled Toadlet can be found in the Australian Museum in Sydney.

Relatives Relatives are: Derby Toadlet Uperoleia aspera, Northern Toadlet Uperoleia borealis, Fat Toadlet Uperoleia crassa, Glandular Toadlet Uperoleia glandulosa, Stonemason's Toadlet Uperoleia lithomoda, Tanami Toadlet Uperoleia micromeles, Small Toadlet Uperoleia minima, Mjoberg's Toadlet Uperoleia mjobergi, Russel's Toadlet Uperoleia russelli, Mole Toadlet Uperoleia talpa, Blacksoil Toadlet Uperoleia trachyderma.
