The Most Recent Animal Extinctions

While little has been documented about most historic extinctions, much more information is available on species that have been lost over the past few decades. This page lists (although incomplete) extinctions over the past 2000 years to provide greater insight into patterns of recent extinction and to highlight those animal species that have most recently disappeared. The number of documented extinctions (according to the 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species 717 animal species since 1500 AD) grossly under represents the true number of extinctions that have taken place in historic times, due to very incomplete and uneven sampling, both geographically and taxonomically. Humans have been the main cause of extinction since 1500 AD with invasive alien species, habitat loss, and over-exploitation being the main causal factors (Baillie et al. 2004).
