Global Extinctions
Lists of Recently Extinct Animals
Extinctions have occurred in all animal groups, but most well documented extinction are mammals and birds. These animals are more loved by people, so people notice them faster than disappearances in other animal groups, like molluscs or insects. Below here you can click on the animal group of which kind of animals you would like to see the list of extinct animals. You can see how many animals are listed on this website, on the 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and how many are missing (possibly extinct).

This
website uses the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which is published by IUCN
- The
World Conservation Union, as its main information source. The IUCN has been founded by the
United Nations in 1948. The IUCN
supports and develops cutting-edge conservation science; implements this
research in field projects around the world; and then links both research and
results to local, national, regional and global policy by convening dialogues
between governments, civil society and the private sector.
Part of these activities is the regularly publication of
the red list, wherefore information has been gathered by more than 10.000
scientists all over the world. The red list has also been worldwide
representative for the
condition of life on our planet.
The 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
lists 717 animal species and 16 animal subspecies as as recently extinct (extinctions since
AD 1500).
