The Australian EPBC (Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation) Act lists the Norfolk Norfolk Island Morepork (Boobook Owl) Ninox novaeseelandiae undulata as endangered. But the last remaining member of the subspecies died in 1996. This last Norfolk Island Boobook Owl was named Miamiti after a matriarch of the Norfolk Island people. Miamiti’s genetics were salvaged by breeding with an introduced male from the closely related New Zealand subspecies Ninox novaeseelandiae novaeseelandiae. The subspecies' genes persist as hybrids. Miamiti had four offspring that have now developed into a population of over 35 owls. This website sees the Norfolk Island Boobook Owl as extinct, because no pure individual exists today.
